2008 Leadership Breakfast to be Held at Capitol Records’ Studio A
The 2008 Sharing Brings Hope Campaign’s Leadership Breakfast will be held in the legendary Studio A, at the historic Capitol Records Tower on January 31. The Hollywood Capitol Tower has been designated an official Historic Landmark by the City of Los Angeles.

World re-known artists including Frank Sinatra, The Beach Boys, The Foo Fighters and many more have recorded multi-million selling albums in Studio A. The orchestral film scores to many films have been recorded in Studio A. The foyer and studio display plaques honoring the many Gold and Platinum artists on Capitol’s roster. The Beatles, Nat King Cole, David Bowie and Radio Head are among the many artists honored.

The Leadership Breakfast serves as a kickoff event for the annual LAUSD Consolidated Charitable Campaign, and is sponsored by its twelve participating charitable agencies. Employees from throughout the District gather to celebrate the previous years campaign, to launch the new campaign and to honor deserving individuals. This year, Sharing Brings Hope will be honoring Yolanda Perez for her contributions as the Districtwide Coordinator to the Sharing Brings Hope campaign for over the last three years.

LAUSD Superintendent David Brewer, Monica Garcia, President, LAUSD School Board, UTLA President, AJ Duffy and Beverly Ryder, Campaign Chair and LAUSD VP of Civic Engagement will be speaking.

AALA President Michael O’Sullivan, Local District Superintendents and several LAUSD School Board members will be in attendance, as well as representatives from many schools and Divisions throughout the District.

       
           
 

LAUSD VP Beverly Ryder Volunteers as Chair of 2008 Sharing Brings Hope Campaign
LAUSD’S V.P. of Business Partnerships and Civic Engagement, Ms. Beverly Ryder, has graciously volunteered to serve as the Chair of the annual LAUSD Combined Charitable Campaign. “This campaign’s theme of Sharing Brings Hope captures the spirit of what our goals are throughout LAUSD. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the twelve outstanding charitable partners that make up this campaign.”

Ms. Ryder had previously been instrumental in the success of Edison’s employee giving campaign, and has served as a board member of various non-profit organizations. “Here at LAUSD, our campaign involves everyone; teachers, staff, students and students’ families. We are all joining together in giving to those who need our assistance. I am positive that everyone can find a program, cause or charity they can donate to from among the 400 charities supported by the Sharing Brings Hope campaign. I want to thank everyone, especially school and departmental coordinators, for their donations of time and money to this wonderful campaign. This year we are focusing on growing participation and donations.”

       
           
  United Teachers Education Fund is Lead Charitable Agency for 2008 Sharing Brings Hope campaign
Each year, on a rotating schedule, one of the twelve charitable agencies that participate in the LAUSD Combined Charitable Campaign becomes the Lead Agency.  AJ Duffy, President of United Teachers Education Fund, announced, “We are honored to lead LAUSD’s  2008 charitable campaign. This year UTLA Controller, Barbara Harvey will be UTEF’s primary representative.  Barbara has long been involved in charitable works and she will be an outstanding leader.” Barbara commented, “ I know that I speak for all 400 charities in our campaign when I thank all the LAUSD employees, students and families for their generous donations in 2007.  I know that we can continue to have an impact and contribute to helping those who need our assistance in greater Los Angeles. Our challenge is to surpass our 2007 pledges. I look forward to working with Superintendent Brewer, Sharing Brings Hope Chair Beverly Ryder, UTLA President Duffy, the charity representatives and all of the coordinators throughout LAUSD.”
       
           
  Staff and Students Increase Cash Donations to 2007 Sharing Brings Hope Campaign
LAUSD staff, students and their families once again displayed their generosity by increasing their cash contributions to the Sharing Brings Hope campaign. Cash donations totaled over $366,000, an increase of 4% over last year. Students from early education centers, elementary, middle and high schools all donated generously. Older students at Adult schools contributed to helping their communities, with Belmont Adult School donating over $7,000. Van Nuys Adult School placed second and Evans Adult, third in the Adult School category. For the third year in a row, Bell High School contributed the most cash donations among all LAUSD high schools, donating over $15,000. Eagle Rock High placed second and El Camino Real, third among high schools. Among middle schools, Pacoima led the way, raising nearly $5000, followed by Wilmington SPS and Le Conte. Couer D’Arlene Elementary edged past Middleton Elementary for first place among Elementary schools, raising over $3000. West Vernon was in third place districtwide. Miles EEC, Wilton Place and Alexandria led in fundraising efforts for the Early Education Center category. Local District Supervisors and Coordinators encouraged competition among schools and helped individual schools to increase donations.

Enthusiasm was high in LAUSD’s headquarters, with many departments increasing both their number of participants and donations. Several departments held fundraising events in the Beaudry building.

       
           
 

2007 Sharing Brings Hope ”Thank You Event” at Luminarias Restaurant
LAUSD Sharing Brings Hope coordinators, principals, teachers and administrators turned out to celebrate the successful 2007 Combined Charitable Campaign results. The annual Thank You event took place at the hilltop restaurant, Luminarias. The event honored outstanding schools and departments for their generous giving. Over 50 attendees applauded the many winners in various categories. LAUSD CFO Charles Burbridge, Local District 4 Superintendent, Richard Alonzo and many schools and departmental coordinators applauded the winners. Representatives from the twelve participating charitable agencies thanked the guests for their leadership and generous contributions of time and dedicated commitment. Asian Pacific Community Fund’s Ellen Misawa, speaking as the 2007 Lead Agency, spoke emotionally to those in attendance, “I just want to tell everyone what a great job you did this year. We know that everyone is busy and that working with the campaign is completely voluntary.  We had a great response from everyone and I want to especially thank the representatives of high schools. Districtwide high school students participated in Sharing Brings Hope at unprecedented levels. Bell High did great, as did several others. All the schools and all the departments deserve tremendous kudos. Again, thank you everyone.”

   

 

 
           
 

2008 Video In The Classroom
Awards Competition
The Sharing Brings Hope Combined Charitable Campaign and KLCS-TV are excited to announce their continuing partnership in the 2008 Video In The Classroom   (“VIC”) Focus Awards competition.  Together, KLCS and the twelve diverse charitable organizations that participate in LAUSD’s Consolidated Charitable Campaign, have selected “Sharing Brings Hope - Caring Creates Community” as the 2008 VIC Focus Award theme.

Every LAUSD school will offer students the opportunity to enter the Video in the Classroom Focus Awards competition. Winners will be selected by a distinguished panel, including KLCS-TV Director of Public Affairs, Jorge Briseno; LAUSD’s Yolanda Perez; Community Health Charities of California, Executive Director, Chris Baca; among others.

KLCS-TV will televise the Focus Awards event, which takes place at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’, Leonard H. Goldenson Theater.  Winning Focus Award videos will be featured at the Sharing Brings Hope Leadership Breakfast and at many school presentations throughout LAUSD. A news segment about the Focus Awards ceremony will also be shown on KLCS-TV.

“The VIC Focus Awards competition provides a unique opportunity to educate students about the important topic of sharing, caring and giving. Sharing with, and caring for, fellow students and the diverse populations of greater Los Angeles, who need assistance, will create a greater sense of community. It is vital that students are educated about the importance of charitable giving and the difference it can mean in people’s lives. The students of LAUSD will learn a sense of helping one another, and understanding the role that the various charitable agencies play”, commented Chris Baca.

Sharing Brings Hope: Caring Creates Community is the theme for the 2008 Art & Essay Contests
Sharing Brings Hope: Caring Creates Community is the theme for the 2008 Art & Essay contests. The Art and Essay Contests allow teachers to fully integrate the Sharing Brings Hope charitable campaign into their curriculum. The art contest is for LAUSD students in elementary and early education centers. High school and middle school students are the participants in the Sharing Brings Hope essay contest. First, second and third place prizes are awarded for the art contest and for separately, for the essay contest 

As we strive to build a learning community teaching students the importance lessons of sharing and caring creates a sense of shared community. Teaching the lesson of giving will influence the nature of LAUSD students. Educating students about the important topic of giving will benefit this generation and the generations to come.

Entries for the Art and Essay Contests can be submitted January 30 – March 21, 2008. Contest judging will begin April 7, 2008. No entries will be accepted after judging has begun. 2007 Leadership Breakfast Has
Record Turnout
The 2007 Leadership Breakfast had a record turnout of LAUSD Board members, administrators, teachers and coordinators. Superintendent David Brewer spoke movingly about the role charitable giving plays in the betterment of our communities. UTLA President Duffy quoted Emerson that “a society is measured by it’s charitable giving. “ The event was emceed by Fox Channel 11 newscaster, Gina Silva, who spoke about her own struggles growing up as the daughter of minority immigrants and how a scholarship made the difference in her life. CFO Charles Burbridge was honored for his work as Chair of the LAUSD Combined Charitable Campaign.

The 2007 Leadership Breakfast was held in the Commissary at Fox Studios in Century City. The Commissary is a designated historic building, which features hand-painted murals dating from the 1930’s. Attendees drove onto the Fox Lot past numerous large stages where ”Some Like It Hot”, ”Hello Dolly”, ”Die Hard”, and numerous Academy Award winning movies were filmed. Fox Studios is also home to ”American Idol”, ”House” and many other television programs.  The Commissary has hosted numerous film stars including Marilyn Monroe, Bruce Willis and Harrison Ford. 
   

 
           
 

2007 Art & Essay Contest Meets With Overwhelming Response
The LAUSD Sharing Brings Hope Art & Essay Contests met with overwhelming response. There were 434 art entries from elementary schools. Middle and High schools submitted 176 essay entries. The art contest theme of Sharing Brings Hope was illustrated in many creative art pieces including paintings, drawings and sculptures. Many of the essays wrote about the importance of giving back and sharing to the various communities in LAUSD. Winners of the art contest are; First place; Sarah Cohen, a third grade student at Serrania Ave. Elementary School in Local District 1. Second place was fifth grader Jessica Carolina Lam of Second Street Elementary School. The third place winner was Lizeeth Gaytan at Napa Elementary School in Local District 1.

Middle School essay contest winners are; Audubon Middle School sixth grade student Denesia Abram is the first place winner. She won a MP3 Player. Second place winner is Laureen Claire DeVera of District 1 Lawerence Middle School. Aram Petoyan also of Lawrence Middle School claimed third place and won a $50 Best Buy gift card and $25 best Buy gift card, respectively. High school winners are from three different high schools. First place winner is Frederick Scarf of Birmingham Senior High School. Second place is junior Deja Christine Johnson of Chatsworth Senior High. Owensmouth High School’s Christina Sica won third place.

The 2007 Sharing Brings Hope marked the third year that the LAUSD campaign included an art and essay component. The goal of the Art & Essay contest is to reinforce skills being taught and to encourage students to begin thinking about helping people less fortunate than themselves
   


 
           
 

VIC Awards 2007 Winners
Sharing Brings Hope sponsored the KLCS-TV/ LAUSD Video in The Classroom (VIC) Awards, Focus Award with the theme “Sharing Brings Hope; Give Back, Move Forward”.  The VIC Focus Award winners were selected from more than 60 projects representing 36 schools throughout the District.

Now in its 20th year, the VIC Awards recognize students and teachers in grades Pre-Kindergarten through Adult School who produce classroom video projects as a natural outgrowth of the LAUSD curriculum. KLCS-TV, presented its annual gala Video in the Classroom (VIC) Awards ceremony on Saturday, June 2, 2007at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre in N. Hollywood.

The Focus Award winners are Elementary - Mary O'Neil; Calabash Elementary; "World Banquet"
Secondary - James Gleason; Cleveland High School;  "The Village"
Special Recognition - Adrian Omansky; Westside Education and Career Center; "Sharing is Caring"

The winners received recognition on a KLCS-TV broadcast and gift certificates to Best Buy. This year’s show was hosted by Adrienne Bankert, news reporter for KCRA in Sacramento. This year's celebrity presenters were Bill Nye ("Bill Nye The Science Guy"), Raven Symoné (That’s So Raven), Emma Degerstedt ("Unfabulous"), Victoria Justice ("Zoey 101") and Tequan Richmond ("Everybody Hates Chris") KLCS telecast the VIC Awards 2007 on Monday, June 11 at 10:00 a.m. and re-broadcast  on several additional occasions. 

Jorge Briseño and KLCS-TV General Manager Janalyn Glymph supervise the VIC Awards program. Entries were judged by  LAUSD’s Yolanda Perez and Jorge Briseño and Community Health Charities Chris Baca and Dolly Pfirrmann.  The VIC Awards broadcast was executive-produced by Jorge Briseño.
